Monday night’s CNN telethon on Larry King Live in support of the Gulf Coast recovery efforts was tremendously successful, with thousands of people calling, texting, tweeting and/or visiting web sites to demonstrate their support.
Preliminary estimates are that the telethon raised $1.8 Million (and counting) for recovery efforts, with donations made to United Way, the National Wildlife Federation, and The Nature Conservancy.
We want to extend sincere thanks to all who donated. If you missed the telethon but would like to help out, there's still time. There are four ways you can give:
- Online: www.unitedway.org/gulfrecovery, www.nwf.org, or www.tnc.org.
- Text-to-give: that option will be available until 10 a.m. EDT on June 27. To give a $10 donation to any of the organizations, people can text "united" to 50555 (United Way), "coast" to 50555 (The Nature Conservancy), or "nwf" to 20222 (National Wildlife Federation).
- Celebrity Auction: The auction ( http://www.charitybuzz.com/auctions/gulf/catalog_items) will be open until 1 p.m. EDT on July 7. Proceeds will be split three ways.
- Twitter: RT2Give $10 to help people: @live_united, wildlife: @NWF & coast: @nature_org affected by #oilspill http://bit.ly/ajigx4 #CNNHelpGulf. Those donations are split three ways.
United Way is helping with emergeny assistance and immdediate needs in the area by helping provide food, clothing, utility assistance, rent and mortgage relief and access to health and mental health care. United Way will also be involved in the long-term recovery of the region, helping people to build more resilient communities. This includes helping people address ongoing educational, financial and health-related challenges.
