Back in 2008,
despite dismal weather, our annual Day of Caring event set a record for
volunteer turnout. We were amazed and grateful. As it turns out, that was
a sign of things to come.
In 2009, we broke
our own record. And it happened again this year...on Friday the 13th, of
all days. The 2010 edition of Day of Caring, our 17th annual event, saw
about 1, 141 volunteers complete 61 projects at 33 area nonprofit agencies
and other organizations. In all, more than 4,400 hours of work were
donated, at a dollar value of nearly $94,000. The total number of donated
hours and dollar value are also records for the event.
The volunteers
represented local business and organizations including Amgen, Ball Aerospace
& Technologies Corp., The Boulder County Business Report, BVSD Retired
Teachers, CableLabs, City of Boulder Attorney’s Office, Covidien, Dietrich
Standard, Faegre & Benson LLP, The Foothills United Way Board of
Directors, Hofgard Benefits, Hewlett Packard, IBM, InfoPrint Solutions Company,
Lexmark, Lockheed Martin, LSI, Merrill Lynch, Nordstrom Rack, Particle
Measuring Systems, Premier Members Federal Credit Union, Roche Colorado
Corporation, The Wireless Alliance, The Times-Call, University of Colorado
students, The University of Colorado Women’s Club, and Vectra
Bank.
This year’s Day
of Caring projects included:

cleaning. maintenance and gardening at Center for People With
Disabilities in Boulder

The projects were
followed by a picnic for the volunteers at Boulder’s Gateway Park Fun
Center. In addition to celebrating the volunteer spirit of our community,
the Day of Caring Picnic serves as the official kickoff of Foothills
United Way’s 2010 Community Support Campaign. Donations made during the
annual campaign each year provide the bulk of funding for United Way’s partner
programs in the community.
